Cash, Craft & Connect Workshops

Indie producers can’t afford to miss these sleeves-up sessions that address all the angles of getting a kids show off the ground. From financing, to creative development, to pitching, we take an intensive look at the whole process on the morning of February 13. Delegates can sign up for two of the following workshop sessions for an additional registration fee of $350*.

Cash: Tried-and-True Financing Models
A veteran kids producer will lead this session, giving guidance on how to construct a financing strategy; outlining the pros, cons and logistics of standard MOs including commissions, presales and co-productions; discussing the best way to work with these partners; and talking about how much you can expect each component to kick in.

Cash: Topping Up
The last 20% of a production budget is often the hardest piece of financing to secure, and the quest for it can hold up the works indefinitely. In this workshop, you’ll hear about alternative cash-up options that can help you reach the finish line, including courting venture capital investment, pursuing master licensing deals, deficit financing, applying for niche & regional production funds, working with educational foundations, and more.

Craft: Bringing the Funny
Ask any kids broadcaster and they’ll tell you that truly humorous scripts are what’s missing from many projects they pass on. Make sure your show concept will deliver laughs by attending this session on writing humor for kids. Our workshop leader will dig into what makes each demographic of kids bust a gut, how to build in a second level of humor in anticipation of co-viewing, and how existing shows hit the right note. Attendees should be prepared to write an act of a script on-site for group discussion and critique.

Craft: Creating Animated Characters That Connect
Learn which graphic approaches work best for different kids audiences, deconstruct top toon characters to find out why they strike a chord with viewers, pick up tips on where to source character designers and how to work with them, find out which character archetypes are overused in animation, and test-drive your own character design skills in a fun creative exercise.

Connect: A Global Primer for Courting Buyers
"Do your research and know who you’re pitching." It’s the cardinal rule of securing a broadcast deal, and yet it’s the number-one thing kids buyers say is lacking in most pitches. So this year, we’re bringing in a seasoned distributor to provide an overview of broadcaster positioning and priorities in key international sales territories. Don’t miss this chance to zero in on the best ports of call for your project.

Connect: Pitching Clinics
Back by popular demand, these roundtable workshops led by a host of broadcasters and veteran producers are designed to help you fine-tune your pitching prowess. It’s a truly hands-on experience, so attendees should come armed with sample pitch materials and a willingness to practice their pitch out loud in a group.
